The Luoyang Peony is China’s traditional and well-known flower. It always represents elegance and poise. With various varieties and marvelous colors, the Luoyang Peony enjoys the honor of “King of the Flower Kingdom” and “Luoyang Peony Ranking the First under Heaven”.

Throughout the city, you can see all kinds of peonies with colors ranging from red, pink and white to the rarest dark. When spring arrives, the whole city is soaked in the sweet smell of peony. In 1982, it was defined as the city flower of Luoyang and at the same time, a decision was made to hold an annual peony fair festival in Luoyang from April 15 to 25, concurrently with lantern shows and other forms of entertainment. During the festival, people from all corners meet in Luoyang to see the peonies and so the city livens up with a spectacle of seas of flowers and tides of people.

In April, you can enjoy yourself in the streets, on Peony Square, in Peony Park and Xiyuan Park. But the most famous place to view and admire the Luoyang Peony is Wangcheng Park.

Located on both banks of Jian River on the north side of the western reach of Zhongzhou Road, Wangcheng Park gains its name only because it is now on the relics of the Imperial City in the Western Zhou Dynasty. Covering an area of 67 hectares, it is the largest comprehensive park in Luoyang.

There is a zoo, peony yards, swimming pools and an under-ground exhibition room of the Han Tomb. In the peony yards on both sides of Jian River, there are thousands of rare and precious peonies named “”Yellow yao “and “Purple wei”. These two peony yards become the main spot of the annual peony fair.

The ancient architectural complex in the western part of the park fully displays the lingering charm of the Zhou’s architectural style. The tablet named Hetu and Luoshu is another attractive spot there. Hetu and Luoshu is a famous legend of ancient Chinese civilization. Some 6,000 to 7,000 years ago, a horse with a picture-scroll named Hetu on its back sprang out of the Yellow River, and an immortal turtle with a book named Luoshu on its back swam in the Luo River. Later, Fuxi, known as the ancestor of human beings, deducted the Eight Diagrams of Yin and yang (the positive and negative) and thus the universe was divided into two, the Heaven and the Earth. However, according to the doctrine of Luoshu, Dayu, the first king of the Chinese Nation, drew up a constitution named “Hong Fan Jiu Chou” to rule the country and from then on began the Chinese civilization. So during every Pure Brightness Festival-held in the 5th of the 24 solar terms, personages of various circles gather here to worship their common ancestors.

“It is hard to find another city like this,” said Dr Sun Yat-sen as he gazed over Nanjing, The city is one of China’s Four Great Ancient Capitals and was much-loved by Sun, the 20th century revolutionary and politician still seen by many as “the Father of Modern China”.

It is fitting that his mausoleum now lies in the city of which he once famously wrote: “The setting of Nanjing is wonderful. Mountains, lakes and plains all abound here.” However, the contemporary and historical significance of this great city extend well beyond the patronage of one historical figure.

Located in the lower Yangtze River basin and the Yangtze River Delta economic zone, Nanjing was China’s capital city across six ancient dynasties and today serves as the capital of Jiangsu province. It also retains its historical role as one of the countries most important hubs for education, research, transportation and, of course, tourism.

Modern-day Nanjing spans a total of 6,598 square kilometers and has more than 7.4 million permanent residents, with more than 75 percent of them now officially classed as urban dwellers.

Its setting at the prime intersection of the Yangtze River with many of the traditional overland transportation routes has seen it established as a key transfer point between the east-west waterways and the north-south road and rail networks.

Nanjing is the second largest commercial center in Eastern China after Shanghai. Recent years have seen substantial investment in the city’s economy, commerce, industry and infrastructure. This investment has seen the city’s GDP rise to $6,000 per head of population, whilst its technical competence and resource now puts it in the top 10 of all mainland cities.

This 21st century transformation of the city was recently acknowledged by Forbes, the authoritative US business magazine. It was singled out as both “one of the most promising cities in the Asia-Pacific and “one of the top three commercial cities in the Chinese mainland”.

Geographical advantage

Nanjing is the most important transportation hub in eastern China and the downstream Yangtze River area. The city boasts and advanced integrated public transport network offering a vital link between land, air and waterway services.

The Nanjing Lukou International Airport is one of the 10 largest in China and has a large number of regular passenger and cargo flights to international destinations, including London, Frankfurt, Amsterdam, Vancouver, Los Angeles, Chicago, Moscow, Tokyo, Singapore and Seoul. In total, some 140 airlines operate services to and from the city.

The city’s harbor is the largest inland harbor in Asia and services some 200 ports in 80 different countries and regions.

A historic and cultural city

The earliest signs of civilizations in the Nanjing area date back more than 6,000 years, with the city itself established 2,500 years ago. During its long history, the city has served 10 dynasties and regimes as the country’s national capital.

It last served in this role during the years of the Republic of China (1912-1949) when the role was again ceded to Beijing. Its long historical associations have left the modern city with a rich legacy of antique artifacts and cultural treasures.

Climate and environment

Nanjing implemented an “urban green space” policy in 2003 and has now completed nearly half of its ambitious tree-planting initiative. This initiative has seen the city’s green area rise to 12 square meters per head of population.

Its eco-friendly progress has seen the city widely honored as a model of sustainable development. It has been recognized as “The National Park City of the Year”, “The National Urban Hygiene Awards” and as a model city by both the National Environmental Protection agency and the National Afforestation agency.

Its status as one of the Chinese cities with the highest standard of living has been enhanced by its low crime rate and high reputation for public security.

In terms of weather, Nanjing falls within the northern subtropical monsoon climate zone and enjoys four seasons with plentiful sunshine and rains. The average temperature is 17.8C and the annual amount of rainfall is 1,034 mm.

Yuejiang Tower sits on the Lion Hill in the northwest part of Nanjing, near the banks of the Yangtze River.

Mount Danxia is a geological wonder created by sandstones and cliffs.

When you mention Guangdong province, many people think first of the Pearl River Delta region’s sprawling metropolis. But the province is also home to unique and beautiful landscapes.

The City of Shaoguan, located in the north of the province, is a good base from which to discover at least three scenic spots - and along the way to learn about the unique geography of the area and the cultures of its minority groups.

Unfortunately, it is a little tricky for a foreigner to get access to information about scenic spots in China. Detailed provincial guides are non-existent, and most tourism websites are in Chinese. This means any trip will require careful advance planning.

Daxiagu, also known as “Guangdong’s Grand Canyon”, is an ideal place to discover the natural splendor of some of the province’s last remaining wilderness. When I made a visit recently, a friendly park worker told me that park staff had gone to great pains to build a reservoir to keep the waterfall active all year long. He also said, proudly, that many graceful cranes had spent the previous winter there. (Cranes are rare birds, and the number of suitable winter spots available for them is limited.)

One of the park’s main attractions is a circuit path that consists of an upper canyon-viewing path and a lower canyon hike. The two are linked by a long stairway of some 1,000 steps. Observing waterfalls, ferns and wildflowers along the way can turn the hike into an endless discovery. The canyon is quite deep, plunging down through layers of sandstone that have interesting pinkish and reddish hues.

Along the road to Ruyuan, you will pass some scenic mountains. As you climb in elevation, you are likely to discover marvelous and distinct flora and fauna. Nature lovers should enjoy a hike here. Sometimes, unfortunately, bad weather can cause landslides on the main road and cause the park to be closed. This is especially true during the summer, when heavy rains can delay your journey.

When I reached Ruyuan, I decided to go to Mount Danxia, the most famous scenic spot in the area. It’s been designated a UNESCO Geopark, famous for its unique range of hills dotted by sandstones and cliffs. The surrounding scenery consists of rivers, lakes, bamboo groves and some temples. Every step of the way brings a different view. The park also has much unique geology. Each type of stone has evolved in a different way, giving the landscape a distinct look.

Guilin is laden with lime and karst, while Mount Danxia, located at the same latitude, is known for its sandstone. The elevation of the hills is about the same, but their shapes are completely different.

In addition to hiking, you can also rent a boat to see the mountains from the lake.

The entire wilderness region is only four hours by train from the province’s well-known metropolis. A visit provides an interesting alternative to the overcrowded southern seashores. Enjoying its easygoing trails, relaxing scenery and good food are excellent ways to revive your energy and your spirits.

Tourists to Guizhou province of southwest China often first want to see Huangguoshu - Yellow Fruit Tree - Falls, one of the world’s most spectacular.

Also popular are the caves of Long Gong - Dragon Palace - or the Zunyi meeting site where the Chinese Communist Party reached maturity in 1935. Other noted attractions include Buddhist mountain of Fanjing and rivers that have been creating canyons for millennia.

But scenery is only part of the experience - ethnic villages interspersed throughout add to the allure:

Yunshantun village at Anshun: Today’s local villagers are descendants of fort soldiers under Zhu Yuanzhang, the first emperor of the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644). The fort is still there today, its door made from stone and its walls hard enough to repel attackers. Women of the village wear the silk belts, white leggings and embroidered boots with an eagle’s head is vividly stitched on top.

Xijiang village on Leishan Mountain: One of the largest Miao villages in China, it has thousands of traditional houses. In the year of the tiger it celebrates the Guzang festival - just once every 13 years.

Zhaoxing village at Liping: Traditional Dong homes made from wood without a single nail can reach 25 m in height. Pictures drawn on interior walls depict people and scenery to tell the story of their culture. The village is divided into five sectors according to concepts - Ren (kindness), Yi (loyalty), Li (ritual), Zhi (wisdom) and Xing (credibility).

Stone village at Zhenning: People of the Bouyei minority make their homes from stone. From a distance the village looks like shining silver. On arrival, tourists often find Bouyei girls dyeing fabric along the valley.

Other sites include Longga village at Liuzhi, where a branch of Miao girls wear wood horns; Langde village at Leishan with its cobblestone roads; a Dong village called Xiaohuang at Congjiang, where troupes of singers from the local Dong minority perform their distinctive melodies; and Luoga village at Weining, where the Yi people make masks as they have for thousands of years.

The Western Regions or Xiyu was a historical name specified in the Chinese chronicles between the 3rd century BC to 8th century that referred to the region of Central Asia west of Jade Gate.

Because of its strategic location astride the Silk Road, the Western Regions have been historically significant since at least the 3rd century BC. It was the scene of conflict between the Han Dynasty and the Xiongnu until the middle of the 2nd century.

The region became significant in later centuries as a cultural conductor between East Asia, the Indian subcontinent, the Islamic World and the West. One of the most significant exports of the Western Regions was Buddhism, which was carried by traders and pilgrim monks to China. The Tang Dynasty monk Xuanzang crossed the region on his way to study in India, penning the classic Great Tang Records of the Western Regions upon his return to the Tang capital Chang’an.

In the 18th century, the Qing Dynasty conquered part of this region and put it under military administration. In 1884, the region was established as a province under the name Xinjiang.

the history of Dunhuang
Dunhuang was made a prefecture in 117 BC by Emperor Han Wudi, and was a major point of interchange between China and the outside world during the Han and Tang dynasties. Located near the historic junction of the Northern and Southern Silk Roads, it was a town of military importance. Its name is mentioned as part of the homeland of the Yuezhi or “Rouzhi” (月氏) in the Shiji (史記), but this mention has also been identified with an unrelated toponym, Dunhong. Edges of the city are threatened with being engulfed by the expansion of the Kumtag Desert, which is resulting from longstanding overgrazing of surrounding lands.[1]

Early buddhist monks accessed Dunhuang via the ancient Northern Silk Road, the northernmost route of about 2600 kilometres in length, which connected the ancient Chinese capital of Xi’an to the west over the Wushao Ling Pass to Wuwei and emerging in Kashgar.[2] For centuries Buddhist monks at Dunhuang collected scriptures from the west, and many pilgrims passed through the area, painting murals inside the Mogao Caves or “Caves of a Thousand Buddhas.”[3] A small number of Christian artifacts have also been found in the caves (see Jesus Sutras), testimony to the wide variety of people who made their way along the silk road. Today, the site is an important tourist attraction and the subject of an ongoing archaeological project. A large number of manuscripts and artifacts retrieved at Dunhuang have been digitized and made publicly available via the International Dunhuang Project.

Dunhuang city centre
Dunhuang’s city centre is relatively highly developed, including much commercial activity and many hotels. Bookshops and other souvenir shops sell materials relating to the Caves and the history of the region.

A night market is held in the city centre, popular with tourists. Many souvenir items are sold, including such typical items as jade, jewelry, scrolls, hangings, small sculptures, and the like. A sizable number of members of China’s ethnic minorities engage in business at these markets. A Central Asian dessert or sweet is also sold, consisting of a large, sweet confection made with nuts and dried fruit, sliced into the portion desired by the customer.

Jiayu Pass is the first pass at the west end of the Great Wall of China, near the city of Jiayuguan in Gansu province. It has also been called “Jiayuguan Pass”; however, this form is redundant since “guan” means “pass” in Chinese. Along with Juyongguan and Shanhaiguan, it is one of the main passes of the Great Wall

The pass is located at the narrowest point of the western section of the Hexi Corridor, 6 kilometers southwest of the city of Jiayuguan in Gansu. The structure lies between two hills, one of which is called Jiayuguan Hill. It was built near an oasis that was then on the extreme western edge of China.

The pass is trapezoid-shaped with a perimeter of 733 meters and an area of more than 33,500 square meters. The total length of the city wall is 733 meters and the height is 11 meters.

There are two gates: one on the east side of the pass, and the other on the west side. On each gate there is a building. An inscription of “Jiayuguan” in Chinese is written on a tablet at the building at the west gate. The south and north sides of the pass are connected to the Great Wall. There is a turret on each corner of the pass. On the north side, inside the two gates, there are wide roads leading to the top of the pass.

Jiayuguan consists of three defense lines: an inner city, an outer city and a moat.

A fabulous legend recounts the meticulous planning involved in the construction of the pass. According to legend, when Jiayuguan was being planned, the official in charge asked the designer to estimate the exact number of bricks required and the designer gave him a number. The official questioned his judgment, asking him if that would be enough, so the designer added one brick. When Jiayuguan was finished, there was one brick left over, which was placed loose on one of the gates where it remains today.

The structure was initially built during the early Ming dynasty, sometime around the year 1372. The fortress there was greatly strengthened due to fear of an invasion by Timur, but Timur died of old age while leading an army toward China.

Among the passes on the Great Wall, Jiayuguan is the most intact surviving ancient military building. The pass is also known by the name the “First and Greatest Pass Under Heaven” ,which is not to be confused with the “First Pass under Heaven”,a name for Shanhaiguan at the east end of the Great Wall near Qinhuangdao, Hebei.

The pass was a key waypoint of the ancient Silk Road.

Jiayuguan has a somewhat fearsome reputation because Chinese people who were banished were ordered to leave through Jiayuguan for the west, never to return.[citation needed]

Around Jiayuguan there are many historic sites such as the Mogao Caves. Many frescos were found in the areas around Jiayuguan
